Blair Castle

At Blair Castle, the Jacobite story runs through the Murray family itself. Close relatives did not always choose the same side.
Different members of the Murray family supported opposing causes during the Jacobite period. Belief, loyalty and calculation all played a part, and those choices also meant the family's future was never tied entirely to one outcome. Blair survived the upheavals, and Murray influence survived with it. The family story is far less tidy than a simple Jacobite-versus-government divide.
The older defensive castle is still there beneath the later house, although centuries of alteration have made the relationship less obvious. Portraits and family names add another layer, especially once the same Murray family begins appearing on different sides of Scotland’s political conflicts.
