Thoughtful private guiding in Scotland means respect for people, places, weather, history, wildlife and the communities we visit.
A private day should be considerate wherever it goes.
Responsible travel matters because Scotland’s places are lived in, worked in, cared for and sometimes fragile. A private day should respect that. It should be enjoyable for the guest, but also considerate of residents, land managers, other visitors, wildlife, paths, historic structures and the communities we pass through.
Ross follows the spirit of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: respect the interests of others, care for the environment, and take responsibility for your own actions. In practice, that means using appropriate paths, avoiding private spaces, leaving historic places as we find them, keeping a safe distance from wildlife, taking litter away and making sensible decisions around weather, ground conditions and guest comfort.
It also means telling Scotland’s stories with care. Scotland’s story is full of beauty, character and complexity. Some subjects need warmth, some need honesty and some need a little more space. The aim is not to shame, simplify or lecture. The aim is to guide well: a warm welcome, honest history and a day shaped around the people travelling and the places visited.
Respect for people and places
Tartan Compass Tours respects residents, local workers, land managers and other visitors. Some places are busy. Some are private. Some are fragile. Some are part of everyday life for the people who live there. Ross will shape the day with that in mind.
Care for the outdoors
Outdoor days should respect paths, gates, livestock, wildlife, moorland, water, woodland and weather. Ross will brief guests where needed and will adjust walking plans if conditions, comfort or safety require it.
Historic places and cultural care
Castles, kirks, graveyards, memorials, ruins, industrial sites and old streets should be treated with respect. Tartan Compass Tours does not encourage climbing on fragile structures, removing objects, disturbing memorials or treating serious places as props.
Honest history
Scotland should not be reduced to postcard views or simple stories. Ross aims to tell Scotland warmly, fairly and honestly, including beauty, achievement, conflict, empire, poverty, migration, work, wealth and community where relevant.
Practical guest care
Responsible guiding also means looking after the guest experience. Ross will be clear about walking distance, ascent, steps, surfaces, toilets, rest stops, weather, pace and comfort wherever possible. Not every place is right for every guest, and a good plan sometimes means choosing a better route.
