Calton Hill

National Monument and sweeping skyline view from Calton Hill in Edinburgh

Calton Hill is where Edinburgh turned a city-centre hill into a place for views, science, commemoration and civic ambition.

A note from Ross

The view is the obvious draw, but Calton Hill gets better when you notice how much civic ambition has been placed on one small hill. Nelson, the National Monument and the observatory buildings all pull you into different parts of Edinburgh's story. I particularly like turning towards Leith and the Forth, because that changes what first looks like an odd monument detail into something connected to the wider city.

Calton Hill became a major feature of the expanding New Town, both as a public viewpoint and as the setting for observatories and monuments. The City Council was being petitioned to create a public walk around the hill as early as 1775. Its prominence made it an obvious place for commemoration. The Nelson Monument, National Monument and other classical structures became part of Edinburgh's skyline, while observatory buildings connected the hill with astronomy and scientific work. The Nelson Monument's time ball linked the hill's scientific life with the working port below, giving the monument a practical connection to the Forth and Leith.

Princes Street was deliberately aligned towards Calton Hill, so the monuments work both as places to visit and as objects designed to be seen from elsewhere in the city. Observatory buildings, memorials, public paths and open ground occupy the same small hill without belonging to one single plan or purpose. From the summit, the view towards the Forth and Leith gives the time-ball story a very different context.
