Dumbarton Rock and castle fortifications commanding the River Clyde.

Before Edinburgh and Stirling became familiar centres of royal power, Dumbarton Rock already commanded the Clyde.

The rock was once at the heart of a powerful Brittonic kingdom and has been fortified for well over a thousand years. Its importance survived major changes in Scotland around it. Later rulers continued to value Dumbarton for its strength, its position and its direct connection to the Clyde and the sea. Different kingdoms, monarchs and armies found uses for the same extraordinary piece of ground.

The rock dominates almost everything at Dumbarton. Its twin summits rise abruptly above the meeting of the Leven and Clyde, and from higher ground the rivers begin to feel less like scenery and more like the routes that helped make the place important.
