Long before Yosemite, John Muir was learning to look at landscape around his childhood home in Dunbar.

Muir was born in Dunbar in 1838 and spent his early childhood there before his family emigrated to Wisconsin. He later became one of the most influential figures in American conservation through his writing and campaigning. Muir himself acknowledged that the landscapes of East Lothian helped form his early attachment to the natural world. His American work grew far from Scotland, but not from nowhere.

The High Street house gives Muir's story a very ordinary beginning, while Dunbar's coast, harbour and open landscape sit close by. Together they make the childhood part of his later conservation story easier to see without turning the place into a simple birthplace memorial.
