Flodden Field

At Flodden, James IV's decision to cross the Border ended with a dead king and a country suddenly facing a very different future.
James IV led a Scottish army into England in 1513 during a wider European conflict involving England and France. He did not return. His death, together with the loss of many leading Scots, left an infant king and changed Scotland's political circumstances almost overnight. The battlefield therefore carries more than a military story. It raises questions about kingship, decision-making and what happens when political authority is concentrated in one person.
At Flodden, the landscape does most of the work. Ridges, slopes and agricultural ground extend well beyond the memorial, giving a much better sense of the battlefield once the eye begins to read the shape of the land.
