George Square & St Vincent Street: Glasgow on Screen

Glasgow's city centre has become an international film set because its streets can look convincingly like somewhere else without losing their own character.
George Square sits right at the heart of Glasgow, with Walter Scott looking down from his column and the City Chambers providing one of the great architectural backdrops. It is also a place in transition, and I am looking forward to seeing the square come back to life with more greenery and colour in spring. I suspect the pigeons will be pleased to get their square back too. What makes it particularly good for exploring is that within a few neighbouring streets you can move from Glasgow's civic story into its life on screen. Places you might simply walk past suddenly become somewhere else entirely.
George Square is Glasgow's principal civic space, while nearby St Vincent Street runs through a dense grid of substantial stone offices and commercial architecture. That combination of width, scale, long sightlines and nineteenth-century fabric has repeatedly allowed Glasgow to double for North American cities in major film productions. Spotting locations is only the beginning. Screen production makes the ordinary architecture of the city centre visible again by showing how much of New York or Philadelphia can already be found in Glasgow's scale, stonework and street geometry.
Long streets, consistent building heights and substantial stone frontages give the centre the visual continuity that works so well on camera. George Square combines civic architecture, monuments, transport and open space, while the commercial streets around it provide a different but compatible backdrop. Film dressing can change signs, vehicles and period detail. Much of the convincing cityscape underneath is already Glasgow.
