Gilnockie belongs to a Border world where family, feud and local power could matter as much as instructions from a king.

For centuries, the Anglo-Scottish Border was difficult for either Crown to control. Families on both sides built networks of kinship, protection and retaliation that shaped everyday life. The Armstrongs became one of the most powerful of those Border families. Stories surrounding Johnnie Armstrong became part of Border memory, although his exact relationship with the surviving tower needs care. That uncertainty is part of the interest. Tradition, family memory and surviving evidence do not always agree.

Gilnockie’s compact scale is a useful contrast with Scotland’s great royal castles. Thick walls, the vaulted lower level and defensive features speak of local power, while one unusual feature higher on the tower connects particularly well with the wider Border landscape.
