Glenfinnan is both a place of rebellion and a place where later generations decided how rebellion should be remembered.
Supporters of Charles Edward Stuart gathered at Glenfinnan in August 1745 at the opening of the campaign to restore the Stuart monarchy. The monument beside Loch Shiel came later. That later memorial adds another layer to Glenfinnan: how subsequent generations chose to remember the rising. Its own history also reaches into empire and the wider world in which it was built.
Glenfinnan contains two different kinds of history in the same view. The loch, mountains and surrounding ground belong to the landscape associated with 1745, while the monument introduces the way a later generation chose to remember those events.
