The Course That Stayed with Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus's relationship with Muirfield lasted far beyond his Open victory here.
Nicklaus first encountered Muirfield through the Walker Cup in 1959. Seven years later he returned to win the 1966 Open and complete the career Grand Slam at the age of 26. The impression lasted into the course he later created near Columbus, Ohio. Muirfield became more than the place of a major victory.
Muirfield's routing repeatedly changes the golfer's relationship with wind and direction of play. That shifting test is part of the character Nicklaus encountered here, and one clue to why the course stayed with him.
