St Andrews: Cathedral & Castle
Photography: Ross McDowell
St Andrews was once one of the most powerful religious centres in Scotland, and the castle beside the cathedral shows how closely belief and politics could meet.
The cathedral became the principal centre of the medieval Scottish Church and the largest church built in Scotland. Nearby, the castle housed bishops and archbishops whose influence extended well beyond religion. By the sixteenth century, St Andrews was at the centre of an increasingly bitter struggle over belief and authority. The surviving ruins still carry evidence of just how far that conflict went.
The cathedral’s ruins still convey something of its extraordinary medieval scale. Nearby, the castle feels much tighter and more defensive, with some of the most revealing evidence of the conflicts centred on St Andrews hidden among features that are easy to overlook.
