The Burrell brings one of Glasgow's great private collections into the woods and parkland of Pollok, where the building and landscape are part of the experience of the art.

A note from Ross

The Burrell Collection is one of those places that deserves time. What interests me most is the choice behind it: what William and Constance Burrell collected, and why those objects ended up here in Glasgow. Pollok takes a little more effort to reach than the city-centre museums, but that is part of the appeal. It gives you room to slow down, and it is somewhere you can return to and still find something you missed the last time.

Sir William Burrell and Constance, Lady Burrell assembled thousands of objects across many decades, ranging from medieval stained glass and tapestries to Chinese art, sculpture and European painting. In 1944 they gifted the collection to the City of Glasgow. The eventual home in Pollok Country Park allowed the collection to be displayed in the kind of natural setting Burrell wanted. The purpose-built museum opened in 1983 with architecture that brings woodland, daylight and long views into the galleries. The setting changes how the collection is encountered, making Pollok part of the museum experience.

Windows repeatedly place medieval stonework, stained glass, sculpture and furniture against trees and daylight beyond them. The collection ranges widely across periods and cultures, so unexpected neighbours are part of the experience rather than a curatorial mistake. Outside, Pollok changes the pace completely. The transition from museum to parkland belongs to the Highlight rather than feeling like an afterthought.
