The Royal Mile: Old Town & Canongate
Ross McDowell / Tartan Compass
The Royal Mile makes more sense as Edinburgh's old spine than as a line of attractions: castle to palace, with closes, tenements, kirk, markets, law, trade and everyday life between them.
The Royal Mile can be overwhelming because so much sits on one ridge. What interests me is that it is really a sequence of different civic worlds rather than one long visitor street. You move through royal power, religion, law, markets and ordinary tenement life, then into the Canongate, which was once a separate burgh with its own institutions and identity. Once that clicks, the street becomes much easier to read. That is very cool.
The Old Town developed along the ridge running from Castle Rock towards Holyrood. Narrow plots and the closes, wynds and courts leading away from the main street created the distinctive fishbone pattern that still shapes how the area feels today. The street connected places with different kinds of authority. Around St Giles and Parliament Square, religious, civic and legal life gathered closely together, while the Mercat Cross marked public and commercial activity. Farther downhill, the Canongate had its own history as a separate burgh associated with Holyrood Abbey. Reaching it means crossing into a different civic story within the same street.
Closes and wynds fall steeply away from the ridge, showing how tightly the Old Town developed on narrow plots. Around St Giles and Parliament Square, church, law, proclamation and public gathering occupy almost the same piece of ground. Above shopfront level, changes in height, stonework, gables, windows and plot width reveal the older town more clearly than a checklist of famous addresses.
