Traquair looks peaceful now, but generations of the same family lived here with the consequences of religion and political loyalty.

Traquair began as a royal hunting lodge and later became the home of the Stuart family of Traquair. Across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, political allegiance and Catholic faith repeatedly affected the family's position. Because the family remained here, those choices can still be followed through a house rather than only through battles, proclamations and public monuments. Some of Traquair's strongest stories lie in what the family preserved, concealed or chose not to change.

Traquair’s political history often survives in small and surprisingly domestic details rather than grand gestures. Rooms, possessions and quieter traces of religious practice sit within a house where generations of one family lived with the consequences of loyalty and belief.
