A little more than 150 years ago, a rough fibre from Bengal, then under British imperial rule, became one of the materials that transformed Dundee into an industrial city connected to the world's trade and economy.
The Verdant Works Museum brings that global story to life. Jute grown in British-ruled Bengal was shipped to Dundee, where whale oil helped make the fibre workable before it was transformed through machinery, skilled routine and demanding labour. The industry created enormous wealth, but it also belonged to an unbalanced colonial economy that exploited workers across continents and distributed wealth and power unevenly. Later uses of the mill in the 20th century tell a story of adaptation, from recycling jute waste to curing rabbit skins for an international market.
Start with Scotland's existing tradition of artisan flax weaving and the skills that helped Dundee adopt new fibres. Then follow what happens to the fibre through the machinery. Imagine the number of hands, repeated processes and the international journeys behind ordinary pieces of manufactured cloth. Then look what came after the jute years: Verdant's later industrial uses show how the same buildings continued to adapt as Dundee's economy changed, and then almost vanished altogether.
What grabs my attention at Verdant Works is that one natural fibre opens several stories at once. Jute connects Dundee to Bengal, industrial labour and colonial exploitation, while innovation, management and technological change also created new industries, markets and opportunities for some workers. I also like the later rabbit-skin story because it shows that the building did not freeze when the jute industry changed. Verdant is strongest for me when you follow material, work and trade together rather than treating it simply as a museum of outdated technology.
