Glasgow's House for an Art Lover began as a design on paper in 1901 and became a real building almost a century later.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald developed the original scheme for an international competition for a house for an art-loving patron. Their proposal united architecture, decorative art and interior design within one conceived environment. The house was never built during their lifetimes. Construction began in Bellahouston Park in 1990 and the completed building opened in 1999. The original designers never saw it built. Decades later, another generation faced the task of interpreting their drawings as a real house.

The exterior combines strong geometric forms with proportioned windows and restrained decoration. Inside, furniture, colour, light and decorative details have been considered together. The rooms show how Mackintosh's approach extended beyond the shell to the interior as a whole. Its completion also involved the challenge of turning historical designs into a functioning modern space.
